Second Chance Fund

On Wednesday, July 7, I received a forlorn phone call from Mrs. Jeighn Dough. Mrs. Jeighn Dough, due to circumstances beyond her control (i.e., life), found herself in the position of having to relocate. What is worse, she could not take her two precious girls, Muffin and Shortcake, with her. Muffin and Shortcake are Pomeranians (3 and 4 years old) who, for reasons impossible for them to comprehend, were suddenly separated from their mom and familiar surroundings. Jeighn, making every possible attempt to keep from bringing them to a kill-shelter, had them boarded at her vet's office (no small financial feat for someone in monetary dire straits as it was) until she could come up with a viable alternative. For weeks, Jeighn tried to find them the best possible home, but with limited resources, this proved more difficult than she had anticipated. This is when she picked up the phone and called the St. Tammany Humane Society. As many in the community are aware, because the Humane Society is a no-kill shelter with limited capacity for both cats and dogs, it is the rare occasion when we are able to take in a homeless or needy pet right away. But in Jeighn's voice was a poignant plea for help; the voice of one who had sacrificed all for her two girls, and was prepared to continue this path of sacrifice until deemed impossible. What was more, little Muffin was diagnosed with heartworms and 2 luxating patellas (two bad knees requiring delicate corrective surgery, which cannot be done at STHS). What, if anything, could be done? For some strange reason, folks do not like to hear that exceptions are made for people other than themselves. I chalk this up to petty human nature. However, there are times when those exceptions are both deserved and justified. Hence, the creation of the Second Chance Fund. The Second Chance Fund was created to determine what those exceptions will be, and Muffin was a pup with a heart of gold just screaming (or yelping, as the case may be) for a Second Chance!! The cost of her corrective knee surgery: $2200. The cost of her heartworm treatment: $200. With your help and generosity, Muffin can get that ‘second chance' she so desperately needs and deserves, and Jeighn can rest easy in the knowledge that sometimes........selfless acts of love and sacrifice do pay off and a second chance for all three of them may lie right around the corner! If you are able to give at this time, please call the Humane Society to donate to Muffin's Second Chance Fund or mail donation to: or donate here using PAY PAL- make sure to use second chance fund as detail Thank you so much!!! |

Who We Are
The St. Tammany Humane Society is the only non-profit animal sheltering and welfare organization serving St. Tammany parish, and as such, we rely primarily on the assistance of the community we serve to care for the more than 1,000 orphaned pets that enter our shelter each year.
We offer a variety of services and have developed several programs to give these companion animals a second chance and a new leash on life.
Please take some time to dig in to the site and see what we’ve got to wag our tail about.
